Yep. He was the supreme god of the Dacians, the people that lived on the current teritory of Romania, before they got asimilated across the centuries by the romans and turned into the romanian people of today. But at some point, Zalmoxis was actually a real person. He was the pupil of Pythagoras and after his death he somehow became a god. I'm not an expert, but I was really captivated by his story when I was a kid.
Interesting. If I may ask, why is he crying in your painting? His tears also seem to be blood, is that a symbolism? My first impression was that he was a forest god, guardian or entity. Where can I read more about him?
interesting brush textures here. really nice textures all in all actually, you've controlled them really well and used them to your advantage. i especially love the way the highlights are done here, you've got a lovely balance between light and dark. and, even though the colours aren't especially bright it all works to bring quite a warm feel which is lovely. i would see that the eyes look very hollow to me, which seems to be what you were after, but even so they look quite flat as well. i'm not sure it just looks a bit strange to me, like it doesn't quite finish or something. i like your interesting uses of colours and overall this is a very good piece of work so well done. keep it up!
