i saw your tutorials on youtube... first time i found a deviant through an outside site :D they were cool. i wish you could do an actual drawing tutoial serie, however. i can't seem to find one.

ones that use other mediums focus on other issues that are unhelpful for digital artists such as mixing paint (if oil painting) or wether to use the tip or side of the pencil (in the case of sketching with pencils) and don't pay attention to digital issues such as which tool can be useful etc.

the tutorials you put up were cool in those areas but it's not the use of photoshop that i need help with. i got at least the basics of the program such as finding the tools and layers down fairly well and even got to effects and transformations etc. but the basics of drawing through the medium of digital painting is where i have difficulty.

how to analyze a photo for light and shadow or proportions etc. how to draw a proper line and so on. for instance in your tutorial of the red riding hood image you easily drew trees the likes i have no idea how to do. how do you know where to put the highlights on the wolf? things like that.

i've done as you instructed (starting with putting refference images, then doing a rough sketch then another) but your rough sketches were good enough to do the lines over them whereas mine are like this: sta.sh/08cdvspuhwl

if you could direct me to a tutorial serie that could help it'd be awesome (or are you in the mood to make another serie yourself? :D )

any help would be appreciated, thanks

Hi Eddie, thanks for the long comment and for checking out my tutorials! I understand your struggles and I relate to what you're saying because I went through the same things myself.

I'm not sure if there is a complete series of tutorials on YouTube that could teach you everything you need to know - mainly because every artist has a different set of things they're good at and things they need to learn - so it's impossible to find something that caters to your own situation.

The best way to get better is to keep practicing. I can see from your drawing that you're ambitious; but your vision exceeds your current skills, so it's very easy to get discouraged. Don't. Try to start on a smaller scale and move on to bigger and bigger projects. Instead of trying to create a perfect digital painting from scratch, focus instead on lighting for a while, then focus on your lineart in a separate drawing, then move on to different textures, etc. Take it one step at a time.

I can't think of any tutorials off the top of my head, but the best way to learn is not through tutorials anyway. It's through the constant sharpening of your skills. I didn't get "good" by watching tutorials. In fact, I hadn't watched any tutorials at all when I was just starting. I was just drawing all the time and getting inspired by other people's drawings. And that's the best advice I can give to anyone who wants to get better.

Good luck!

thanks for the advice. i will take it to heart. i do some drawing (i am a bit versitile with the exception of expensive mediums, i do anything from writing prose/poetry to drawing with pencil to pixelart to digital art to photography to cooking and so on) and i have improved over time but i think i could really bennefit from tips and direction of the general kind.

for instance, a few tidbids i've picked up:
1. while drawing rotate the elbow and not the wrist, to make a smoother straight/curved line
2. use the side of the pencil for filling and make use of pressure
3. in pencil work direction of the drawing matters
4. in writing- show, don't tell
etc.
these few tips and others like it have made my skills leap from work such as aspiredwriter.deviantart.com/a… which i made shortly before i really started trying to get into drawing to my recent work such as aspiredwriter.deviantart.com/a… in drawing on paper, from aspiredwriter.deviantart.com/a… to aspiredwriter.deviantart.com/a… in digital painting

yes, partly my improvement is due to practice but i think more than that are little understandings i got over the past few years that have helped me improve and it is that which i need now. i feel i'm missing mostly now the comprehension of the image. in that i mean not the actual how to draw this or that (though i know i need work on that as well) but rather the "how do you know what to do" for instance in looking at an image of a person how to recognize what shades are where, the various little shapes, in highlighting, where to place it (aside from the obvious rim of the figure), stuff like that which is much harder to get with mere practice.
